I started serious overseas backpacking right about the same time the internet and email became a reality for backpackers everywhere. To keep in touch and document our various adventures, I've made a habit of stumbling into an internet cafe a few times each trip and hammering out a dispatch from the road. These can and do vary from rants about the difficulty of traveling to overly poetic attempts at self-actualization. These days, these emails are read by well over a hundred people and, for better or worse, have become a tradition.
